Student Statement

The Student Statement is to express the ideas and concerns of participants on each topic tackled during the SB05Tokyo Student Session, and to stimulate the proposition of their vision towards the future of sustainable building practice.
For this purpose, this Student Statement was drafted during the Design & Discussion-based Workshops (24th - 25th September 2005), and was adopted at the Closing Session (26th September 2005).
(The following is the process towards the Student Statement.)
Introduction
One of the prior objectives of the student session is to propose a student statement that will be adopted in the end of the event as the result of session activities. The statement will express the ideas and concerns of participants on each topic tackled, stimulating the proposition of their vision towards the future of sustainable building practice.
WHY having a student statement?
The idea of a student statement as the main output of the student session reinforces the main SB05 conference logo - "Action for Sustainability”. This is because the document expresses the students’ perspective of what needs to be done to reach the ideal scenario of sustainable built environment. Student sessions in upcoming SB conferences will also benefit from our statement, forming the basis for future discussions in the field.
The questions will provide the main elements to build the general structure of the student statement. They will be used in two occasions: prior to the event as questionnaire for participants and during the workshops for developing the statement. There are four questions:
Question 01 - WHAT is the ideal situation for the well accomplishment of sustainable building strategies in a 30-year timeframe? Please provide your view of this ideal scenario for one of the following areas:
- Sustainable Building Design
- Bio-climatic Design in Tropical and Subtropical Region
- Energy Use in Buildings
- Urban Regeneration
- Sustainable Construction
- Sustainable Building Education
Question 02 - HOW do you propose to achieve each of these scenarios in terms of strategies and measures?
Question 03 - WHO will be responsible for achieving the strategies and measures you have set? Consider the role of involved organizations, such as government, research/academic institutions, private sector, NGOs, etc.
Question 04 - WHEN or in which timeframe do you propose to achieve those strategies? Consider setting short/ medium and long-term strategies for achieving the goals proposed.
The output from those questions will help us to identify key points in relation to the sustainable building practice and research field, from a student perspective. These points will form the basis of discussion for the student statement framework during the workshops as shown in the table below:
